In this expert roundup, leaders share inspiring ways they’ve aligned CSR initiatives with core values, from zero-waste practices to community impact days. These stories highlight how embedding values into CSR brings authentic, positive change for employees, communities, and the planet.
Align CSR With Core Values
Our business takes a dual approach to corporate social responsibility by focusing on both materiality and deeply embedded company values. Materiality ensures we prioritize the issues that are most relevant and impactful to our stakeholders, from environmental sustainability to ethical business practices.
By regularly assessing which areas present the greatest risks and opportunities, we ensure that our CSR efforts address the most pressing concerns in a way that drives long-term value. This focus on material issues allows us to respond dynamically to changing expectations while maintaining transparency and accountability.
At the same time, we are guided by a set of core values that define who we are as a company. These values—integrity, kindness, and responsibility—shape every decision we make, ensuring that our actions consistently reflect our ethical commitments. This alignment of material priorities with our foundational values ensures that we don’t just meet external expectations but also live our values in every facet of the business.
We recently launched a community-driven initiative where employees partner with local nonprofits to address critical social issues, aligning with both our material focus on community engagement and our core values of kindness and responsibility. This program empowers employees to volunteer their time and skills, making a direct impact on underserved communities while fostering a sense of purpose and connection.
Although it required significant resources and coordination, the initiative demonstrated our commitment to living our values and addressing material social concerns. By bridging our CSR priorities with meaningful action, we not only strengthen our ties with the community but also create a workplace culture where employees feel proud to be part of a company that genuinely cares.

Adopt Zero-Waste Construction Practices
We have a “zero-waste construction” approach as one of the more-innovative practices we’ve taken up. What this means is that, in order to construct any pond, whether it’s a koi, wildlife, or our specialty—natural swimming ponds—we use only 100% recyclable or sustainably-sourced materials. Each piece of construction waste is recycled; so there is no landfilled waste left behind.
Let’s say we have a new project where we have constructed a huge natural swimming pond. For this work, all the excavated dirt was used to plant elsewhere in the client’s garden, and the remainder was put to other projects. Not only does this reduce our ecological footprint, but it helps the staff and customers feel an environmental responsibility. It’s not just about creating ponds, but creating an environment that encourages sustainability in a way that we all can identify with, showing that we’re not only making beautiful aquatic spaces but preserving our planet.

Integrate CSR Into Business Model
Corporate social responsibility isn’t just a concept we talk about—it’s something we actively integrate into our business model. For us, real estate goes beyond just properties; it’s about building stronger communities and fostering human connections. This starts with how we treat our team. We prioritize open communication, encourage a healthy work-life balance, and ensure every employee feels valued. By creating a positive, supportive environment internally, that mindset extends to how we interact with clients and the broader community.
One initiative we’re particularly proud of is our recent collaboration with a Montreal nonprofit to secure affordable housing for low-income families. This project not only provided much-needed housing but also allowed our team to see firsthand the direct impact of their work on the community. It’s initiatives like this that demonstrate how we turn CSR principles into meaningful action, benefiting both our employees and the people we serve.

Sponsor Local Events and Initiatives
As part of our mission to connect with our community, we proudly sponsor a wide range of local events and initiatives that reflect our commitment to making a positive impact. Our participation in the Memorial Day Parade serves as a poignant example of how our team unites to support community traditions and honor the sacrifices of our veterans. By actively engaging in this event, our team pays tribute to those who have served and encourages a sense of camaraderie among our employees and residents.
We also provide numerous sponsorship opportunities for local schools and charitable organizations. These partnerships enable us to support various educational programs, sports teams, and community service projects. Our team members are encouraged to volunteer their time and talents, whether by mentoring students, assisting with school events, or contributing to charitable causes. This hands-on involvement has allowed us to build meaningful relationships with the organizations we support and helps address the needs of our community.
Our employees take pride in being part of a company that values giving back, which fosters a sense of purpose and fulfillment in their work. By demonstrating our commitment to corporate social responsibility, we inspire our team to embrace a shared vision of making a difference, ultimately enhancing both employee morale and community well-being. Together, we strive to create a lasting impact that enriches the lives of those we serve and fosters a brighter future for our community.

Implement Triple-Win Approach
I believe corporate social responsibility, ethical practices, and supporting a culture of kindness towards employees, customers, and the community are all interconnected. We call it the “triple-win” approach. The idea is simple: If you treat your employees well, they will be in the best position to treat your customers well, and when both are thriving, the company inevitably succeeds.
For our employees, we prioritize their well-being by offering a supportive work environment with competitive wages, comprehensive benefits, and opportunities for professional growth. We also focus on work-life balance and create an open space for feedback, ensuring our team feels valued and heard. When employees feel respected and motivated, it naturally reflects in how they interact with our clients—providing excellent service with genuine care and professionalism.
We are heavily involved in community outreach programs with local schools and apprenticeship programs. We partnered with local vocational schools to provide hands-on training to students interested in the electrical trade. Our employees volunteer their time and expertise to mentor these students, giving them real-world experience and contributing to their education. This is a way to give back to the community as well as foster a sense of purpose within our team, as they see the direct impact of their work beyond just business operations.

Encourage Employee-Support Systems
These are values we put emphasis on by making them part of our normal activities and company guidelines—so that they resonate beyond the cubicle walls.
A direct way that we encourage a spirit of compassion is by having an adequate employee-support system, for example. This means providing comprehensive mental-health tools and flexible working schedules that consider individual life situations. Through doing good things for our people in real, meaningful ways, we help employees live in a world where respect and compassion are built-in values and will follow them through the relationship with customers and community.
Our community clean-up every year is one such instance of how we think about reaching out. Rather than merely sponsoring or being involved with external events, we have an employee-led day to sweep up our local parks and public places.

Partner With Local Growers
At my flower shop, we take corporate social responsibility seriously by ensuring we operate ethically and foster a culture of kindness not just toward our customers but within the community too. One way we do this is by partnering with local growers to source flowers sustainably, ensuring we support small farms while reducing our environmental impact. We also make it a point to regularly donate floral arrangements to local hospitals and nursing homes, spreading a little joy where it’s needed most.
A specific example that comes to mind is our annual “Bouquets of Love” event, where we invite customers to purchase bouquets at a discounted rate, and we match each purchase by donating a bouquet to local shelters and care facilities. It’s become a tradition, and it’s heartwarming to see how the community rallies around the cause, turning flowers into a symbol of kindness and connection.

Commit to Community Donations
With over 150 employees and their families living and working throughout northern New Jersey, we recognize our responsibility to make our community a better place. We are committed to fostering a culture of kindness not only towards our employees and customers but also towards the broader community we serve. This commitment is reflected in our substantial donations—totaling over $250,000 over the last two years—to various organizations and events.
Our contributions include support for New Hope Community Ministries, Eastern Christian Schools, Hawthorne Gospel Academy, and Habitat for Humanity, among others. We believe in the power of giving back. In addition to monetary donations, we created Reiner Gives Back, where we work with our suppliers to provide new equipment, and our employees volunteer to install it for families in need.
We also work with Servant’s Heart Ministries’ Workmanship Program. This program provides an introductory trade education, and Reiner Group helps students get hands-on HVAC experience. The goal is to give the students the tools they need to take the next steps to a career in the trades. We continue to actively seek partnerships with organizations that align with our values and mission, and allow us to give back to our community.
One of our favorite large-scale give-back projects was in January 2019. We replaced the boilers in 54 family public housing apartments at Ramapo Brae Lane in Mahwah and 12 apartments at DeSimone Court in Ramsey. This project, fully funded by Bergen County Community Development Block Grant funds, upgraded the heating system to a more efficient model and also eliminated the need for water tanks, allowing residents to gain additional storage space. This initiative significantly improved the living conditions for families in these housing complexes, demonstrating our dedication to enhancing community welfare.
Our employees take great pride in knowing they are part of a company that genuinely cares for the community, which enhances morale and fosters a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued.

Andrew Hulsebos, Service Director, Reiner Group Inc.
Launch Community Impact Days
Our company places a high priority on corporate social responsibility, ethical practices, and fostering a culture of kindness. We believe these elements are crucial for long-term success and positive impact. One specific example of our commitment is our “Community Impact Days” program.
Through this initiative, we give employees paid time off to volunteer at local charities. Last year, our team contributed over 5,000 hours to various causes, including environmental cleanup, food banks, and youth-mentoring programs. This program not only benefits the community but also boosts employee morale and engagement. We’ve seen increased job satisfaction and team cohesion as a result. Additionally, we’ve implemented strict ethical-sourcing guidelines for our supply chain, ensuring fair labor practices and environmental sustainability throughout our operations.

Support Trauma Recovery Events
Our legal firm focuses on initiatives that support survivors and promote healing from trauma. One of the ways we foster a culture of kindness is by actively sponsoring community events that focus on trauma recovery and psychological support for survivors. These events provide education, resources, and a sense of community for individuals who have experienced sexual abuse, helping them access the emotional and psychological care they need as they move forward with their lives.
Our firm is proud to sponsor community events dealing with trauma and psychological trauma in collaboration with mental-health professionals, trauma counselors, and survivor advocates. These events create safe spaces for survivors to connect with experts who specialize in trauma recovery, helping them build the support systems necessary to heal. Beyond our legal work, we believe in addressing the broader impacts of sexual abuse, ensuring that survivors have access to holistic care.
I personally serve on the Board of Survivors in New York, an organization dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of survivors of sexual abuse. Through this role, I collaborate with community leaders, nonprofits, and legal professionals to ensure that survivor voices are heard and acted upon in shaping policies and programs that directly impact their recovery and safety. This commitment reflects our firm’s ethical focus on doing what’s right for survivors, beyond the courtroom.

Alex Zalkin, Partner, The Zalkin Law Firm P.C.
Host Annual Tree Donation Day
Corporate social responsibility is at the heart of our operations. We prioritize safety and environmental sustainability by using eco-friendly techniques and ensuring tree health rather than unnecessary removal. Our team culture is built on respect, fairness, and continuous training, ensuring our employees feel valued and empowered.
A specific example is our annual Tree Donation Day, where we partner with local schools and parks to plant trees, promoting green spaces in the community. This initiative reflects our commitment to both the environment and giving back to the neighborhoods we serve.

Embed Ethical Standards in Work
We prioritize CSR by embedding ethical standards into every aspect of our work, from client interactions to community engagement, while fostering a culture that emphasizes kindness and respect toward our employees, clients, and the broader community.
For our employees, we cultivate an environment where personal growth, work-life balance, and mental well-being are valued. We recognize that a supportive, compassionate workplace translates into more dedicated and empathetic service to our clients. We believe that kindness in the workplace fosters collaboration and innovation, creating an atmosphere where employees feel valued and empowered.
For our clients, we adhere to the highest ethical standards in all legal proceedings, ensuring transparency, integrity, and fairness. We approach each case with a commitment to defending our clients’ rights and understanding the broader impact of our work on individuals and society.
As part of our commitment to the community, we actively participate in charitable initiatives, sponsor local events, and engage in programs that promote justice, education, and equality. One specific example of our commitment is our partnership with a local nonprofit that offers legal assistance to victims of domestic violence. Every year, we dedicate a portion of our time to providing free legal advice and representation for survivors seeking protection orders and other legal remedies. This effort aligns with our core values of standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, and it allows us to give back to the community in a meaningful way.

Chris Walsh, Criminal Defense Attorney, Walsh Law
Sponsor Community Outreach Programs
We prioritize a culture of kindness and community engagement, and we believe that supporting our employees, customers, and the community is just as important as the services we provide. One of the ways we do this is through active participation in community outreach programs.
We were proud sponsors of the 1923 Society Celebration, an event that supports local causes and organizations. This sponsorship reflects our commitment to giving back and being a responsible corporate citizen. Internally, we focus on creating a positive work environment where our employees feel valued, supported, and motivated to do their best, knowing that a strong team leads to better service for our customers. Our goal is to extend this care beyond the workplace and into the communities we serve.

Ryan Camp, Owner & President, Harrington Air Conditioning
Implement Eco-Friendly Initiatives
We prioritize corporate social responsibility (CSR) by embedding ethical practices in every part of our operations. We focus on sustainability, employee well-being, and giving back to the community. For example, we’ve implemented eco-friendly initiatives, like minimizing packaging waste and increasing energy efficiency in our 3D-printing solutions, to reduce our environmental impact.
Internally, we foster a culture of kindness by encouraging open communication and supporting continuous professional growth. A recent initiative involved providing flexible work arrangements to accommodate personal circumstances, reinforcing our commitment to employee well-being while maintaining productivity.
