It is easy to think that making costly purchases or taking on challenging tasks is the only way to bring about change in a culture that often appears overwhelming. But as science and history have shown, even small deeds of kindness may have a big impact on the giver and the receiver. In this piece, we’ll discuss the ways that good deeds propagate throughout society and why there is never a “right moment” to make a change.
The Science of Kindness: Why It Matters
Kindness has real advantages, according to research, not only for the beneficiaries but also for the givers. A 2010 study that was written up in the Journal of Social Psychology states that being kind to others has a big positive impact on happiness. Compared to those who didn’t, study participants who performed modest deeds of kindness for others said they felt more pleased and happy. Another University of British Columbia study discovered a connection between kindness and lower levels of stress and anxiety, especially in social settings.
The interesting thing about kindness is that its advantages spread quickly. A person is more inclined to “pay it forward” and show compassion to others when they are the recipient of or witness an act of kindness. Because of the ripple effect that results, a single deed can have a profound impact on a large number of individuals, uplifting entire communities and beyond.
Historical Examples of Small Acts with Big Consequences
A person’s behaviour can alter the course of history, as seen by the numerous instances throughout history of seemingly insignificant deeds that had profound effects.
The tale of German tycoon Oskar Schindler, who is credited with rescuing more than a thousand Jewish people during the Holocaust, is one such instance. Starting with hiring Jewish labourers to shield them from Nazi persecution, Schindler’s modest acts of goodwill developed into a major, life-saving endeavour. His narrative continues to inspire millions of people, and his little acts at first had a huge impact on the world.
Consider Mother Teresa on a more intimate level. She was a strong proponent of the effectiveness of little, kind deeds. She once remarked, “Not everyone is capable of great things. But we can act with immense love even in little ways.” Her work with the impoverished in India began with small deeds of kindness, like providing food for the hungry and consolation for the dying, and developed into a global movement of compassion.
The Ripple Effect in Action
Being kind extends beyond large, impactful acts; it also includes modest, daily deeds that subtly improve the world. Think about these small, daily acts of kindness that can have a good impact:
- Assisting a neighbour: Even tiny acts of kindness, like picking up a neighbour’s groceries or calling on an elderly person, can foster a feeling of community.
- Supporting ethical companies: You contribute to the creation of a more equitable world every time you decide to assist a company that places a high priority on sustainability, fair salaries, or ethical practices.
- Listening to someone in need: Often, merely being there for someone during a difficult period of life can have a profound impact on that person’s mental health.
These actions may not seem like much, but studies show that even the tiniest gestures can have a big influence. A Harvard University study found that people are more likely to be generous themselves when they see others being giving. This “domino effect” illustrates how a modest deed done today could spur a larger action by someone else tomorrow, greatly increasing your influence.
It doesn’t take wealth, celebrity, or a lot of work to make an impact. There is only one step involved. To assist you in starting your own chain reaction of kindness, consider the following ideas:
- Speak with someone: Telling someone you care may make their day, whether it is via a text, phone call, or in-person visit.
- Offer your assistance: Find a cause you care about, even if it’s just for an hour a month, and donate your time and expertise to it.
- Offer a commendation: A few simple words of encouragement can make someone feel better and start a positive domino effect.
Kindness is lovely because anyone can practise it, no matter what their circumstances. No matter how many people you assist, your efforts are worthwhile.

About From the Heart
HeartBeat Blog’s From the Heart series is a heartfelt exploration of the many ways we can create a kinder world. Making a difference and paying it forward don’t have to follow a single path—just because someone chooses a different way to contribute doesn’t mean their impact is any less valuable. Acts of kindness, generosity, and positive change take many forms—some visible, some quiet, but all meaningful. True change happens when we acknowledge and respect the diverse ways people give back, whether through direct action, advocacy, education, or simply offering support in ways that might not be immediately obvious. Every effort counts, and the key is not to measure impact by our own standards alone but to recognise the many ways people strive to make the world better in their own way.
From the Heart captures this spirit through essays, opinions, poetry, non-book reviews, and musings—sharing both everyday and extraordinary moments that inspire change. Alongside these reflections, you’ll find news, event announcements, and updates from the Store with a Heart community, celebrating the many ways we can impact lives and lift one another up. Whether through personal stories, creative expression, or reflections on life’s small but meaningful acts, From the Heart offers an open space to inspire, connect, and celebrate the journey toward a better tomorrow.
